  1. Hello, I love how you added “the next steps” in your powerpoint briefly explaining that there should be accessible and affordable activities to help this population in Maine be more involved in the community. Having those with disabilities get involved with sports teams to be active, public transportation that is more wheelchair accessible for them to get places where they need to go (for example, doctors appointments, going to the store, getting medications from the pharmacy), and also even making the workplace more accessible for those with disabilities too. I think that is something we definitely need more of in our community. I also agree with educational seminars for everyone in the community to reduce stigmas by educating others and really supporting those with disability. This was a great presentation to learn more about this population in the community of Maine!

  2. I really liked listening to your presentation, I felt like I learned a lot about this population. It’s sad that people with disabilities have an even harder time accessing health care due to Maine being such a rural state. I thought the questions you asked for your interview were very well written and helped me understand everything Camp Pinetree has to offer for this population. Great presentation!

  3. This presentation was full of really great information regarding the population. I always assumed that there would be a difference in the cost of living, but to see the actual demographic information regarding the increased percentage was shocking. I had never heard of the Robbie Foundation, so it was very interesting to hear about that and the impact it has on this population. It was great to see the number of other resources available to this population and hopefully, the amount keeps increasing over the years, especially in the realm of transportation as Sarah had mentioned. I think it would be great to see a resource developed specifically for that. Well done!

  4. The demographic rates shocked me- I figured that the disability rate of the population was under 10%. I also thought that disability rates are higher among men rather than women, as I personally have only known men with a disability. I think that having education seminars for not just this disabled population, but for all individuals as a way of increasing knowledge and decreasing stigma is a great idea.

  5. Your presentation is very reflective of how we can help people with disabilities in Maine and you directly connected your interview to the next steps. I think the idea of introducing best buddies in high school can help fight the stigma because if we present the opportunity to help at an early age, adolescents will hopefully be more accepting of vulnerable populations. I think we can all agree highschoolers can be mean and judgmental, but if they realize the impact they have on making these people feel included, they can recognize just how valuable the act of giving is. When people are so used to being stigmatized at baseline, they may be withdrawn from their community. Best buddies is a great concept to show children with disabilities that we support them and advocate for their access to recreational activities, safe transportation, and more.

  6. Izzy and Jordyn- I really like how you included specific examples of discrimination occurring within this population, and what outcomes are associated with it. This part really helped with tying in which resources are appropriate for those with disabilities. I also like how you guys highlighted the importance of education within this population, not just the activities and resources available.

  7. This slideshow was very informative. I appreciate the way you both broke down your data and explained it in an understandable way. I also appreciated the addition of the “Next Steps” slide. Teaching people ways that improving accessibility is possible will hopefully motivate those in the healthcare setting to make real change!

  8. After watching your video, I thought that your presentation gave a great variety of information when expanding on the population of individuals with physical disabilities. I chose to watch your presentation because as you know we attended Camp Pinetree as well and I wanted to get another view on this topic. In the demographics section of this presentation, I found it very interesting that more women than men have a disability and the percentage of children with disabilities is higher than I had first thought. I also found that when you spoke to the COVID 19 vaccine that it was mandated for those that had a disability even though some of this population did not have access to this vaccine. In addition, it surprised me that the those with pre-existing condition that had a disability were told to they could not get the vaccine. However, it seems that now this vaccine is available to those with disabilities but not does have any requirements behind it which is a positive. Lastly, I like that is your next steps section of this presentation. This offered many different resources for those with disabilities in Maine, I especially liked the craft fairs option. This was a great presentation that really showed all aspects of physical disability great job!

  9. This presentation was very informative about people with disabilities accessing healthcare. I loved being able to see all the different resources that are available to people with disabilities. It can be a very daunting expense that is placed upon a family or person very quickly. By having these relieving resources it is nice to offer support and aleve as much pressure as possible. The interview was very interesting to see the true impact of health policies in motion. I love that they run their program year round because it wouldn’t be a true Maine program without some ice fishing!

  10. I really liked your presentation and your ideas to improve programs that could include people with disabilities. I also really enjoyed hearing about available sources for these people. I did not know some of them and I thought it was really interesting learning more about it.

  11. Great job you guys! I really enjoyed listening to your presentation. I thought it provided a lot of great information about this population. I liked how you guys included specific examples of discrimination that occurs. I have not heard of the Robbie Foundation before, so I enjoyed learning about that. Overall, very insightful presentation.

  12. I thought this presentation was put together nicely. I was surprised to hear that this population is about 16% and consists of more women than men. You made good connections between the population and specific interventions in Maine such as Camp Pinetree, and had a strong interview to support it. I think you provided a lot of information and made a presentation that was easy to follow!

  13. I think you guys made good connections between the population and specific interventions in Maine such as Camp Pinetree, with a strong interview with one of the directors. I found it interesting that she said access to both healthcare and recreation together is a challenge due to the rural and isolated parts of Maine. I also think that it worked in your favor to have volunteered here and got to experience all of the benefits firsthand. You provided a lot of information and made a presentation that was easy to follow!

  14. I was interested in your topic because we both did ours on the same population, and I wanted to see if you had any information that we missed. I did not know about the covid 19 mandate and its effects on the disabled population, and I do think it is a positive that it finally was changed. I like how you also added that in Maine there was a craft fair for disabled individuals, it is important to know some of the local things that happen. Overall there was a lot of information in your presentation that was not included in ours, and that can be a positive thing considering how this population needs resources that other populations may not need.
