Revisiting the Image

Write a response about another important quality or skill of a nurse that gets less attention in popular culture. Is this part of nursing usually represented in fictionalized nurses? What do you think will be challenging about the more mundane duties of nursing as compared to the idealized qualities or skills of a nurse?

A quality of a nurse that gets less attention in pop culture is how they are leaders. Many TV shows highlight the role of the doctors and dismiss the importance of the nurse. Nurses are the people that are there for the patient 24/7. They are the medical professional that communicates to the doctor about the status of the patient. They tend to lead conversations about how the patient is feeling and any concerns that the person and family have. Something that may be challenging during the more mundane duties of nursing is that it will feel like chores.

Image of Nursing

Explain why you chose that image and how this image connects to a quality that is important for a nurse. How does this quality connect to your reasons for wanting to become a nurse? Do you know a nurse, or are you drawing on experiences with nurses? Who created it? Where did you find it?

This picture spoke to me the most because of the idea of heroism. The image is mimicking the iconic Super Man logo but instead of an “S” the diamond contains words like “caring, honest, compassionate, and respectful.” The words on the inside of her scrubs are a few characteristics I’d like to think are needed when becoming a nurse. Nurses are the people you are having direct and consistent contact with when you are ill therefore I see them as the modern-day hero. I wanted to become a nurse because I want to make people feel better and happy again. The background of the image includes different symbols that represent sexuality and sexual orientation. Personally, I will always support inclusivity and equality. Nurses will face people from all different walks of life, genders, races, and sexual orientation and it should have no effect on the quality of treatment given. I do not know the nurse who created this image. I found this image on the Otterbein University Website. A student named Savannah Gammel is apart of the class of 2023 at Otterbein Universty. Gammel created this as her final project in her Fundamentals of Nursing class.

Final Refection LO3

Throughout the year I have noticed a dramatic improvement in my critical reading skills. In high school, I was told to read and mark anything that I had a question about or thought could be important. I didn’t have any system or structure I could follow to make my notes meaningful. Once attending UNE I learned how to used different letters to categorize my annotation to help me use them later on in my writing. This system helped me write a more meaningful analysis. This also helped me find quotes in the reading to use faster therefore completing my essays faster. Understanding what I am reading has always been a struggle for me but I have found that my new system has helped me tremendously.

How did switching genres from academic paper to podcast allow you to think in a different way about the subject of your paper? How did it allow you to use language differently?

Starting with an academic paper, I really focused on the evidence and the analysis. I wanted to know the facts that would help me emphasize my overall idea of the paper. After completing my paper I had to turn it into a podcast which then really made me think about my life. Creating a podcast allowed me to relate what I was writing in my paper to personal experiences. I really enjoyed the challenge of changing an academic paper into a podcast because it showed me a new skill of changing langue to sound more casual which isn’t required as much in college. I now prefer podcasts because it makes the topic I am writing about even more interesting because I can talk about it in relation to my life.

Empathy Interview Planning

For my empathy interview, I plan on talking to my Mother because I am interested in what she has to say about this topic. I want to try to alternate quotes of my paper and questions so that my podcast flows better. I hope that this will create a more natural conversation. If I cannot create this format then I will start with my paper then transition to the questions. A few questions I have for my interviewee are:

If everyone had empathy how would the world be different or the same?

When was the last time you were empathetic?

How did you try to teach your children the notation or compassion and understanding? Is there anything you would change?

If you could be in anyone else’s shoes for a day, who would they be? why? I would add this to create a fun environment for this podcast and lighten the mood if it gets really deep.
